A coalition of NGO's speak out on the people's mandate
The coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations say it is alarmed and concerned over COVID-19 and political instability.
It says the elections in Sabah is the direct cause of the new wave of infections nationwide.
The grouping also suggests that reforms should be carried out and that this should be left to Anwar Ibrahim.
“The ongoing effort to lift him up as the new Prime Minister is sound, correct and has to be supported and accepted by all parties.”
However, it says the political crisis faced by the country in February has not subsided and it is now in an impasse.
The regime in power, it says has failed in addressing COVID-19 and in putting an end to the political crisis.
The coalition says now there is, “intense contest between various parties.”
The ruling coalition it says in a statement is defending its narrow majority at all cost.
“Eight months have passed, since the Sheraton Move on February 24, 2020, the political crisis does not seem to subside but gets even more critical.
“The Perikatan National (National Alliance) ruling party as well as the Prime Minister have apparently failed to deal with the situation.
“People’s faith and trust have eroded in the present government. The political situation has become volatile. The state of the economy is getting worse and the people are suffering from the loss of jobs and earnings.”
CALL FOR NEW GOVERNMENT
To address this critical situation of the country, a credible new government is needed to restore the people’s confidence, says the statement.
“Clearer efforts and better measures are needed to curb the new spread of Covid 19. Aggressive endeavours to help the affected groups impacted by the various MCOs (Movement Control Orders).
“Especially with regards to the problem of unemployment which is becoming more serious,” it says.
The coalition says there is a need for solutions to rebuild the confidence of entrepreneurs and to assure investors on the country’s economic ability to rebound and grow.
NO TO GENERAL ELECTIONS
The grouping speaks against any idea to hold general elections.
“This is totally unreasonable and perilous as a way out for the government. We need to learn and appraise from the Sabah state elections which had triggered a shocking new wave of the Covid 19 pandemic.”
The statement is signed by Ahmad Azam Ab Rahman the President for the Movement for An Informed Society Malaysia/Wadah Pencerdasan Umat Malaysia (WADAH).
The risks are far too great and the ill-effects on the society could lead to a possible loss of control of the pandemic.
Nevertheless, the coalition says rumours that the National Action Council (MAGERAN) might impose emergency measures is unacceptable. It is irrational and authoritarian, it says.
RESTORE PEOPLE’S MANDATE
“In our opinion, the best way out of the predicament is to restore the sacred mandate given by the people on 9 May 2018.
“The election radiated a refreshing democratic process and produced the results desired by the majority of the people.
“They want a government that prioritizes the Reform Agenda. But the people’s wishes were denied and betrayed on 24 February 2020.”
Giving full support to His Majesty DYMM Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
And it believes there is room for a smooth transition.
“We uphold the highest love for His Majesty DYMM Yang di-Pertuan Agong who has reminded politicians to pay close attention to people’s problems and needs.
“We believe in His Majesty’s wisdom and standpoint which have always been for the people to help them and the country seeking a way out of the current national political turmoil.
“The role of His Majesty DYMM Yang di-Pertuan Agong allows for a smooth transition of government in accordance to the provisions contained in the Federal Constitution.”
Previous cases and precedence which occurred in the matter and manner of the appointment of Tan Sri Mahyuddin Yassin, changing the governments of Perak, Kedah, Johor and Melaka, have shown and proven that changing governments happen without incurring major problems.
“We take this opportunity to express our regret over parties that continue to conspire to disrupt the due process of democracy and urge that such the unjust effort be stopped.
“Their actions are not only not unfair and undemocratic, but also unacceptable and go against the people’s aspirations.
“We call on all parties to move forward boldly to support the noble struggle to build a harmonious and prosperous Malaysia, to work together as leaders committed to the reform agenda, towards a democratic, fair and equitable nation.”
