In response to the United States' attempt to pressure Malaysia regarding its stance on the Palestine-Israel conflict, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim revealed that the Malaysian envoy to the United States was called by American authorities to discuss Malaysia's position.

The U.S. was particularly concerned about Malaysia's refusal to condemn Hamas and label them as terrorists. Malaysia received diplomatic communication from the U.S. Embassy twice, on Oct 13 and Oct 30, urging Malaysia to use diplomatic channels to prevent countries from becoming involved in the Gaza conflict through proxies.

US Pressure on Malaysia

“The Malaysian envoy to the United States was called by the American authorities, who questioned our stance on the conflict, especially the violence inflicted by Israel on Gaza,” says Datuk Seri Anwar during Prime Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday.

“I was informed by the Foreign Ministry that Malaysia received a demarche from the US Embassy twice, on Oct 13 and Oct 30, where Malaysia was asked to use diplomatic channels to urge a country to not take advantage of the conflict by using a proxy to get involved in the Gaza conflict,” he adds.

While not specifying the country, it is believed that the reference was to Iran. Anwar emphasized Malaysia's independent stance in supporting Palestine and condemning Israel's occupation.
