Infection rises in Singapore, Thailand and 75,000 feared infected in Wuhan!

A study says some 75,000 people are infected with the Wuhan virus in the city which is the epicentre of the outbreak.

AFP says the a University of Hong Kong study estimates the number of infection to 75,000 in Wuhan.

According to the research, this estimate is as of January 25. More could be infected, however.

Hubei province – including Wuhan, is a city in central China of 11 million people. The outbreak started in the city and is spreading across China.

SOUTHEAST ASIA

The number of infected people is on the rise in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam, putting these countries at risk.

Below is the number of infected persons in six Asean nations:

Thailand: 19
Singapore: 18
Malaysia: 8
Vietnam: 6
Cambodia: 1
Philippines: 1

Indonesia has has suspected cases with the media claiming one Indonesian at least is in quarantine. The patient is undergoing intensive care.

Some reports from Indonesia say there are four cases. But these cases are not confirmed.

The government says some 250 Indonesian citizens evacuated from China’s Hubei province will be in quarantine.

They will be send to a military base on Natuna Islands.

Three other Asian countries are showing signs of a rise in outbreaks of the virus. The list is below:

Japan: 20
South Korea: 12
Taiwan: 10

On Saturday, Singapore says there are confirmation of two more cases of infection in the country.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Saturday (Feb 1) says this bring the total number to 18.

The 17th case is a 47-year-old Singaporean woman who visited Wuhan. She is one of the 92 Singaporeans evacuees from the city on Thursday. The 18th case is a 31-year-old female Chinese national.

On the other hand, Thailand has seen its first case of human-to-human transmission of the new coronavirus inside the country.

A senior Public Health official says the patient is a Thai taxi driver, Tanarak Pipat.

The Thai person did not travel to Wuhan but was probably in contact with a sick traveller from China.
