Learning From The Jan 6 Chaos In Democracy

When the United States sneezes, global democracy is sick! China believes in the second part of this statement, that is democracy in the US is crumbling.

The communist country, however, fails to see beyond the violent Jan 6 incidents and the impact it will have on the world.

They also fail to look at the repercussions it may have in China’s Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China itself in the long run. Remember Tiananmen. It can repeat.

This is how China views Jan 6 events.

The brazen and violent attack on the Capitol shows a lack of courage and responsibility from the politicians, says a Chinese Think Tank.

The Think Tank says the lawmakers were overwhelmed and hid or scattered for their lives while the world was watching.

These are moments China’s Communist Party will play in a loop to its audience in China. The aim will be to show how much democracy is failing in the greatest democracy in the world and how communism brings stability and prosperity.

For the Chinese, the American political community, both Democrats and Republicans, “did not show the courage, cohesion, and, above all, integrity and rationality that one would expect and that they used to claim for themselves.”

These are the comments made by an analyst from Anbound Malaysia, a Chinese think tank from Beijing, China that have an office in Kuala Lumpur.

For Anbound, Jan 6 is a comprehensive institutional failure. China is rejoicing, Amerca is sick. Communism is winning.

The Democrat government may pressure China on its human rights abuses. This may become a part of the US policies towards Beijing. But will President Joe Biden pursue efforts for democracy to take shape in China? Does that mean the end of the communist rule in China?

The fact that China imposed sanctions on former President Donald Trump’s officials shows the pain Beijing went through with the trade war.

China is good at hiding facts and in presenting manipulated figures, says the Trump administration, and that can be verified by the strong image the country presented at the height of the trade war.

Only to angrily attack the officials of the past administration and accuse the Trump government of interference in the internal affairs of China.

“Over the past few years, some anti-China politicians in the United States, out of their selfish political interests and prejudice and hatred against China and showing no regard for the interests of the Chinese and American people, have planned, promoted and executed a series of crazy moves which have gravely interfered in China’s internal affairs, undermined China’s interests, offended the Chinese people, and seriously disrupted China-U.S. relations,” China’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

A long diatribe, but not long enough to show the true feelings of the Chinese in the wake of the trade war.

Nevertheless, the mainstream media and pro-Democrat blogs and commentators widely agree President Donald Trump triggered the Jan 6 violence.

WRITING HISTORY

There is always the other side of the story that is buried in the pile of editorials and news reporting demonizing Trump and his supporters.

While this has a great effect on the supporters of the Democratic party, it is possible that this time around, the winners are not alone in writing history.

On one side, it is the resistance of the pro-right and conservative movement in the US that will influence the march of democracy in some parts of the world.

On the other side, the overreacting Democrats and their core supporters risk causing more damages to the global democracy movement.

Because it will get China, for example, to poison the minds of its people with anti-democratic propaganda, using both the actions of the Republicans and the reactions of the Democrats.

For countries like Venezuela and China, it is a great victory. The leftists may not have the same gut as Trump to go after President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela or continue the trade war against China.

The aftermath of the Jan 6 events also poses many questions on America’s human rights policies.

If you watch TikTok, you will find tons of people lambasting Mr Joe Biden for his son Hunter Biden’s alleged links with China and VP Kamala Haris for her past statements.

TikTok users are also questioning the way the government handled the Jan 6 rioters, comparing them to responses during the Black Lives Matter outbursts.

January 6 will remain a crazy moment for the Americans but it has a hidden message for countries where democracy is failing.

Democracy takes root in some countries because people want to follow the idea of freedom and justice, not because America imposes its idealism.

But it is the fascination we have for America and its politics that is consuming our world. If the White House under President Donald Trump was aspirational for some, equally, the manner the Democrats are handling their big win is influential for others.

The Jan 6 incidents tell the world that democracy is in a difficult phase and people are fed up and willing to cross the line and take what they want or think is theirs.

This is a total breakdown of law and order yet it reflects on the entire American system, which is the mirror of global democracy.

That said, we know there are difficulties in other democracies. Britain for example is struggling with its Westminster-style democracy.

The lawmakers are saying the Parliament does not have enough powers to give the government the powers it needs to move the country in the right direction.

For that matter, the British caused Brexit to happen and pulled out of the European Union. This gives them the free hand to remake their democracy with unprecedented reforms.

But contrary to what the US represents today, the British system, once reformed will altogether attempt to influence the democracy movements in the world.

However, it might be a bit too late because what happens in America does not stay in America. it fireballs across the globe and its ashes will stain democracy.

The greatest democracy on earth has done a good job exporting its democracy to us, through its imperialistic designs or with coups and military invasions.

But more important of all, it is the long history of stability and progress in the United States and the great American dream that galvanizes those living outside the country.

The rest of the world is drawing examples from Trump’s four chaotic years and have started to take note of President Joe Biden’s rule. Some observers see the new government in America as ruthless and domineering.

DOMINEERING

A government that may not stop at doing what it wants to do even if that will destroy relationships on a global level.

The energy policy of President Joe Biden is one example. His government’s support for big tech and the companies involved in climate tech is also another big issue.

The rush to impeach Trump while he is leaving office is another ugly example seen as a need for revenge from the Democrats. Could it stiffen the resolve of leaders who lost elections in other countries, probably forcing them to follow the Jan 6 mob?

The way the elections were conducted in the US and the long waiting game has caused some democrats outside the US to question an otherwise perfect system.

What the rest of the world saw was two forces fighting for power and the left won. For the right-wing or conservative forces outside the US, it is a blow.

It is telling people who are fighting for a better democratic experience in their countries the battle is now harder. But it is not only the actions of President Trump and his supporters that made them sick of the new reality.

The desperate actions of the Democrats have also shocked many.

When will the acts of revenge end?
