Major hurdles ahead in Mahathir's bid to form new gov't

Ex-PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad will face several major hurdles in his fresh bid to form a new government.

Besides his lack of support among the 222 MPs in the Parliament, it is his intentions that will fail him.

The refreshed bid to form a unity government, an idea that failed in February, is to stop Anwar Ibrahim at all cost.

Several news portals say Mahathir met with the leader of the Amanah, Mohammad Sabu or Mat Sabu. He also met with an Umno MP, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

The portals say he is also waiting to see who else among the other political parties are willing to visit him.

STOPPING ANWAR

He wants to know their ideas and he wants to detail his plans to them.

Obviously, Anwar is not in these plans and that is because they are to block his move to become PM.

A source told WFTV.LIVE that Mahathir is motivated to revisit this defunct idea because of the possibility that some MPs might openly support Anwar in the next Parliament seating.

The elderly fox is trying to present a credible and solid alternative to Anwar, hence the meeting with Razaleigh.

But it appears both Mahathir and Ku LI will have difficulty to get the numbers.

The plan is surely to poach MPs from all parties, including the Keadilan. The aim is to weaken Keadilan at the same time.

PAKATAN HARAPAN BEHIND ANWAR

However, Mahathir’s plans is already seeing hiccups.

The Pakatan Harapan has today registered Mahathir’s interest in the grouping. But they have decided to give full support to Anwar.

Indeed, Keadilan is also firmly behind Anwar and it is unlikely any of its MPs will support Mahathir in his hasty bid.

This means they do not give a damn about Mahathir’s renewed interest in his failed plans for a unity government.

In his talks with the politicians—he also met with the current Religious Affairs Minister Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri— he says he intend to have a mix of politicians and technocrats in the cabinet.

Mahathir’s plot is to prepare for the next seating of the Parliament and to hope there is a chance to push for a no-confidence vote.

If that were to happen, he hopes the efforts he is making will bear fruits.

That is the MPs he is canvassing will give him full support and he will return as PM before the Nov APEC meeting.
