Malaysia: Wadah urges timeline for smooth transition
The Movement for an Informed Society Malaysia urges the country’s leadership to set a date for a smooth political transition.
Praising PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his brilliance and leadership, the movement wants a transition date.
Headed by Ahmad Azam Ab Rahman, Wadah says it is wise to set a transition date.
“It is wise and sagacious to set a transition date for handing over the premiership to the Prime Minister in waiting Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” says Azam.
The former ABIM chief expresses the movement’s gratitude to Dr Mahathir, but says the timeline will secure the PM’s legacy.
It says a planned transition and orderly implementation of the succession plan will ensure the country’s political stability.
“Setting this transition date is vital for the prosperous future of the country. It will fulfil promises that have been made.
“A planned transition is good for the sake of political stability that is now increasingly being disrupted by wily political players,” says Azam.
He says this will honour and respect the rakyat’s decision and choice, and ensure the stability of the country’s economy in facing a climate of global uncertainty.
ANWAR THE DESIGNATED PM
Wadah says Anwar Ibrahim is the leader of Parti Keadilan Rakyat, a partner in the present ruling coalition.
He was the chief negotiator and peacemaker in the run up to forming a fruitful and effective political pact which made winning GE14 on May 9, 2018 possible.
Anwar Ibrahim is also the designated Prime Minister in waiting as formally agreed by Dr Mahathir and all of the PH partners.
“He is popularly accepted by the rakyat. His place and responsibility is to be in the right and proper position to lead the nation to success.”
The media release says Anwar as a Malaysian is a practising Muslim, a Malay, a democrat and he fights for justice and freedom for all Malaysians, and there is no problem or contradiction in all of these.
Anwar Ibrahim has been consistent throughout as a man striving for reform, fighting corruption, working hard for accountability and good governance, it says.
“He fights for all Malaysians,” Azam says.
The Pakatan Harapan leadership is meeting to decide on a transition date.
The six leaders are Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and the coalition’s president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
They will probably set a date unless there is opposition among the leaders, which seems unlikely.
