Najib's accounts and Rosmah's Birkin bags

Rumours are that ex-PM Najib Razak’s accounts are under scrutiny as they are blocked from any transactions.

The same is the case for his wife, Rosmah Mansor’s accounts said unconfirmed reports.

The reports also suggest that the new government is not going to allow Najib and his wife any chance to wire any transfers out of the country.

However, there is the possibility that some transfers might have occurred prior to the appointment of Tun Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister.

Reuters also reported that police on Saturday ‘raided’ a deluxe Kuala Lumpur apartment block at which relatives of ousted Prime Minister Najib Razak had been staying.

Reuters said police said they were acting after a complaint that a government vehicle had delivered dozens of boxes made to carry designer handbags and other items to the apartment for Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor.

The police later said they did not raid the house.

Birkin bags

Reuters saw about 20 police officers enter the marble-floored lobby of the Pavilion Residences apartment block in the Malaysian capital.

The police report of the complaint, reviewed by Reuters, alleges that vans emblazoned with the logo of the department of the prime minister and cabinet delivered boxes for 50 Birkin handbags to Pavilion Residences on Thursday evening.

The report alleged that the boxes showed the name of the consignee as Rosmah Mansor.

Fleeing the country

Mahathir blocked an attempt by Najib and his wife to exit the country on Saturday morning.

A private jet landed at the Subang Airport in Kuala Lumpur with Najib and Rosmah named as the passengers.

The manifest showed it was heading to Indonesia while Najib later said he and his wife wanted to take a two-day break to head to Bali.

The story of their attempted flight out of the country went viral on Thursday night, a day after the massive defeat of the Barisan Nasional in the 14th Malaysian elections.

Najib subsequently resigned from the Umno and the BN’s leadership.

Netizens in Malaysian social media networks has urged Mahathir to quickly seize Najib and Rosmah’s accounts and to prevent them from fleeing.

New 1MDB investigation

Mahathir has shown that he is determined to nail Najib and his partners in the 1MDB scandal.

The opposition Pakatan Harapan has called the scandal a financial crime and will eventually open a criminal investigation into the scandal.

Najib is seen as the main culprit in the syphoning of billions of US dollars from the sovereign fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad or 1MDB

The scandal rocked the country and the government headed by Najib since 2013 when RM2.6 billion were found in Najib’s private banking account.

The bank, AmBank, has since then been penalised by the central bank.

But with the Mahathir government soon in place, there are talks of a relook at all the offences committed under the 1MDB scandal.
