The Philippine military has accused China of engaging in "unsafe actions" in the South China Sea. A Chinese navy ship attempted to cut off a Philippine navy vessel during a resupply mission near Thitu Island.

The Chinese vessel came within 320 meters of the Philippine ship, endangering the lives of maritime personnel from both sides.

Peaceful Approach in SCS

This incident, it is said, is part of a series of Chinese attempts to monitor and block Philippine resupply missions in the South China Sea. China claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, a crucial trade route. Tensions have risen as the Philippines has strengthened ties with the United States.

Nevertheless, while Manilla is attempting to impose itself in some parts of the SCS, there is a need for the country's leadership to adopt a more peaceful approach.

There is no reason or need to raise tensions in the SCS which is a very important trade route for the Asean countries, for China and for the rest of the world. No one wants a hot conflict in the region altogether.

On the other hand, China must continue discussing with the Asean nations and with Manilla on a peaceful resolution of the problem.
