PTR disagrees with MMM on 'truce' towards government

The PTR through one of its top leaders Shakeel Mohamed disagrees with the MMM’s Paul Berenger on how to handle the government after the polls.

The MSM-ML-Allies won a large majority of seats in the hotly contested elections on Nov 7. But it only won 37% of popular votes.

While it is normal in a democracy, there is also more than 60% of voters who ditched the ruling coalition candidates.

However, Berenger seems to be less interested in tackling the regime of Pravind Jugnauth head-on after the polls.

He urged his party members to give the government time to implement its promises. Which may take five years to accomplish.

On the other hand he urged the government not to govern with arrogance because it did not gain a majority support from the people.

PTR WON’T WAIT!

But in reply to Berenger’s appeal, PTR’s Shakeel says there is no giving time to the government.

His argument is this government is not a new government that won the elections for the first time.

Instead it is a regime that has returned to power, winning a difficult elections with only 37% of votes.

Though the coalition in power has 42 seats in Parliament, it is still a minority government for both opposition parties.

Berenger blames the electoral system for the majority of seats that went to the government.

He also blames the electoral system and an absence of reforms in the system that played against the MMM.

“It is a hard knock on the MMM. But we are not giving up, the very next day of the results we are meeting to discuss out stance,” he says.
