Singapore First Country In Asia To Cut-off Coal Usage?

Singapore joined the Powering Past Coal Alliance, an international coalition of countries, cities, regions, and businesses promoting the transition from coal to clean energy.

On Thursday, the alliance welcomed 28 new members, including Chile, HSBC Bank, and Canadian utility TransAlta, bringing the total number of members to 165.

Singapore’s membership was announced via video message during the COP26 climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland.

Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu says coal combustion puts billions of people in immediate danger. Hence, Singapore joins the club to reduce carbon emissions.

Thus, Singapore pledges to phase out unabated coal in the electricity mix by 2050.
