Xi Catching up with Western Climate agenda

Xi Catching up with Western Climate agenda

Addressing the opening ceremony of the high-level segment of the second part of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), held in Canada’s Montreal on December 15, 2022, China’s President Xi Jinping sought to share his country’s concerns about climate change with the West.

He said solidarity” was “the only effective way” to address global issues like protecting biodiversity.

Shared Biodiversity

He also said Humanity lives in a community with a shared future and needed solidarity and cooperation is the only effective way to address global challenges.

But his overall message is China is not going to be left behind in the global fight against climate change and Beijing is willing to work with developed nations to help in achieving their net zero success.

It is a good sign indeed and I believe China is going to be a major player in the shift towards green technology and also on sharing its expertise in the environmental challenge the world is facing.

On the other hand, we can sense that China will not allow itself to be pushed aroud by other powerful nations on the climate change agenda. China like many other countries need time to adjust in this new era of green tech and green business in which the west has taken a big lead and is already pushing their agenda in a global scale.

To do that China wants to work with the developed nations to find solutions that are appropriate to the Chinese business and climate environment.

BRI and climate challenges

About the BRI, I have the feeling that Mr Xi wants to bring the countries that are already working with China in the border less strategy on board its environment protection strategy.

We might see more investments from China in countries that are in need of environmental friendly cash to push forward in the protection of the environment and in the repair of damages already to some ecosystems in the past.

China had the monetary power to reverse the trend and catch up with the west in the ESG domain for example and it can win this battle because it is not fussy in its investment choices nor does it impose several conditions for countries in the BRI sphere to get its funding.
