America’s war in Afghanistan is ending in crushing defeat: The Economist

America’s crushing defeat in Afghanistan is taking shape after ten years of killings, arrests, and imprisonments. America has lost the war in Afghanistan.

This will be the official result after August 31, the date for the American withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Americans will keep many soldiers (1000 troops) to guard its facilities there. But that will be it for boots on the ground.

On the other hand, Washington may continue to bomb Taliban targets and its troops to give some peace to the government.

But there are doubts this will stop the Taliban, which is fast advancing on targets and cities in the country.

The Economist agrees the Taliban has already overrun much of the countryside. However, the government units are mostly restricted to cities and towns. The Taliban is not targeting these for now.

The government troops are demoralised after losing their masters from America. They are abandoning their posts, running to Tajikistan and fleeing when they see the Taliban coming.

On paper, the Taliban agrees to some terms laid by the Americans. That is a peace deal with the western-backed government. But the insurgents will never lay down their weapons, one of the key elements in the deal.

Another element is for the warriors to push their ‘political’ wing in the political arena. To debate, dispute seats and win-or-lose elections.

Again, that will be up for debate among the Taliban soldiers once the American troops leave the country.

ATTACK

Why would the Taliban work with a government — as corrupt as the Taliban claims they are — when they can simply topple them?

For sure, the Americans and the West will continue to finance the government in Kabul. And they will not sponsor A Taliban-led regime.

Nevertheless, once the American troops say bye-bye to Afghanistan, they will sign the official defeat of America in Afghanistan.

As of July 27, 2018, there have been 2,372 U.S. military deaths and 4 Department of Defense civilian deaths in the War in Afghanistan. 1,856 of these deaths have resulted from hostile action. 20,320 American service members have also been wounded in action during the war.

This results from a war the Americans thought they would win. They never thought it would be their second Vietnam. But will Washington draw lessons from this defeat?

The American media is vile in their acceptance of the defeat of America in the graveyard of empires.

They have are now calling the Taliban by all the names. They used to call them by these names before and after the toppling of the Taliban regime in 2001.

“The zealots of the Taliban, who harboured Osama bin Laden and were overthrown by American-backed forces after 9/11, have made a horrifying comeback,” writes The Economist.

Last year’s figures bring the total number of civilians who have lost their lives in the armed conflict over the past six years to 14,728. 7,559 Afghan casualties were documented by UNAMA, of which 2,754 were deaths and 4,805 were injuries.

Between 2016-2020 (inclusive) there have, in Afghanistan, been: 3,977 total civilian casualties from airstrikes: 2,122 civilians killed, 1,855 civilians injured. 1,598 total child casualties from airstrikes: 785 children killed, 813 children injured.

But these lives, for the Western Media, do not matter. It is the Taliban that matters! But the Taliban has defeated the US.
