DAP faces significant leadership challenges ahead
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, a DAP vice-chairperson, is grappling with fallout from an MACC investigation into her former aides, accused of misappropriating constituency funds

As of March 13, 2025, the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in Malaysia faces significant leadership challenges ahead of its Central Executive Committee (CEC) election on March 16.
Two prominent figures, Teresa Kok and Chow Kon Yeow, highlight the internal turbulence rocking the party.
Teresa Kok’s Election Woes
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, a DAP vice-chairperson, is grappling with fallout from an MACC investigation into her former aides, accused of misappropriating constituency funds for inflated smart board purchases.
Kok, who sacked the aides last year upon discovering their misconduct, now fears backlash from party delegates. She told Malaysiakini that dissatisfaction among DAP members, especially in Seputeh, could cost her a CEC seat, with some viewing her as complicit despite her denial of influencing the MACC probe.
The arrest of one aide, a fellow CEC candidate, has fueled perceptions of internal sabotage, further clouding her prospects.
Chow Kon Yeow’s Strategic Bid
Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, also a DAP vice-chairman, is contesting the CEC election to maintain influence as a state leader. Having stepped down as Penang DAP chairman in 2024 after over two decades, Chow argues that a CEC role is essential for effective governance, especially with mega-projects on his agenda.
Analysts suggest that top CEC positions could position members for Cabinet roles if the ruling coalition retains power, making Chow’s bid a calculated move amid DAP’s evolving power dynamics.
Broader Context
The DAP’s leadership race is heating up against a backdrop of factional tensions and public scrutiny. Posts on X and recent analyses hint at a deeper rift, with some predicting a “permanent split” driven by ideological clashes and ethical scandals.
While veterans like Lim Kit Siang remain symbolic figures, the party’s direction hinges on navigating these challenges, balancing reformist ideals with political pragmatism. The March 16 polls will test DAP’s unity and resilience.
