On the 58th anniversary of Mauritius’ independence, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam outlined two urgent priorities for his government: combating drug trafficking and stabilizing the economy.

Ramgoolam described the fight against drugs as a battle against “a snake with several heads,” acknowledging the deep infiltration of narcotics into society. Since January 2026, police and customs have seized 90 kilos of drugs worth over half a billion rupees.

He announced the creation of the National Crime Agency, working with Scotland Yard, alongside reforms in forensic laboratories and rehabilitation programs. “Apart from the damage drugs cause to youth, it is also a security problem for everyone,” he said.

Turning to the economy, Ramgoolam warned of a looming downgrade if debt and deficits are not reduced. He blamed past mismanagement for leaving Mauritius with a 90% deficit and debt exceeding 600 billion rupees. His government, he pledged, will regulate key sectors such as electricity, water, and healthcare, while mobilizing diaspora expertise to strengthen institutions.

Ramgoolam emphasized unity and resilience: “Rome was not built in one day. Mauritius has the capacity to become stronger and prosperous.”
