Ghurib Fakim to submit resignation soon
Gurib-Fakim mulls quitting as President of Mauritius, says a source to WFTV.
The news come in the wake of a motion of no confidence by Labour MP Shakeel Mohamed.
The Parliament is to debate the issue illico-presto.
The ganging-up of opposition parties against her on the motion of no confidence is adding pressure for her to quit.
Mohamed said in his letter that the Parliament has no confidence in Mrs Ameenah Gurib-Fakim.
The opposition parties are indeed a minority in the Parliament.
But recent disclosures of details about a credit card issue could get some MSM MP’s to join the opposition.
The president was also linked to lone Alvaro Sobrinho.
The Sobrinho case rocked the Mauritian media with accusations that the Angolan businessman had used Mauritius to ‘mask illicit activities’.
Reports said that the Mauritius’ ministry of good governance suspected Sobrinho’s foundation were involved in such activities.
Reports says the President used a Platinum Card obtained from an NGO for her personal expenditures.
Not to mention that the NGO, Planet Earth Institute (PEI) is Sobrinho’s foundation.
In the light of the reports, a source said it is time for her to quit.
Banking transactions shows the card was from the PEI.
Sobrinho allegedly purchased four Range Rovers and three Jaguars for 40 million Mauritian rupees (more than a million euros).
The vehicles were for politically-exposed people in Mauritius.
The accusations suggests underhand dealings with the republic’s president Ameenah Gurib-Fakim.
Notwithstanding that Gurib-Fakim is a partner in the Mauritius’ based offshoot of Sobrinho’s foundation.
The media in Mauritius is stating that records show that Gurib-Fakim’s credit card had facilities worth RS 1 million.
Nevertheless, reports implies the PEI got the Barclays bank to increase the card spending limit to a million rupees.
The purchase of an Apple Laptop at the Apple Store de Washington D. C. and the records of other seemingly personal expenses by the President are published on Motinews.
Additionally, records show the card was also used in December 2016 for more than Rs 90 000 purchases at Roberto Naldi.
