Gokhool President? But Gurib-Fakim challenges reports

Gokhool President

Dharam Gokhool for President?

He is favourite to become the next President of Mauritius, says our correspondent in New Delhi.

This in the event Mrs Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the sitting President, were to proceed with a resignation bid.

Gokhool has a long political background and is ex-Minister of Education (2005-08).

He was one of those chosen to become the Vice-President of Mauritius in 2014 but the Movement Liberateur claimed the spot.

The party of Mr Ivan Collendavelloo had promised the post of VP to a Mauritian of Tamil origin.

Our source says in the event Mrs Gurib-Fakim resigns in the next few hours, the chances Gokhool called-upon is high.

Dharam Gokhool comes from the Ravived ethnic group which forms part of the Hindu community in Mauritius.

The source told WFTV it is high-time a Ravived was nominated for the post.

In the past, the only Ravived to hold the post of Vice-President was Sir Robin Ghurburrun.

Ghurburrun was the Vice President of Mauritius from 1992 to 1997.

“The Ravived forms the majority among the Hindus in Mauritius.

“But it is the Vaish who dominates. For example, former PM Navin Ramgoolam and Mentor Minister Sir Aneerood Jugnauth are Vaish.

“It is the unity among the various Vaish groups in Mauritius that ensure the fact that they become the Prime Ministers,” said our source.

But, the source said, the Ravived has a large number and can be seen as the largest Hindu group in the country.

The Vaish is a union of many other groups of similar ethnic backgrounds.

This makes them the majority, though they are a fractured grouping, says our source.

Gurib-Fakim challenges media

President Gurib-Fakim challenged the media reports about her ‘personal’ expenses using a credit card linked ‘flagged’ organisation.

She told Radio Plus today she doubted the authenticity of the documents published in various news portals and at least one newspaper.

She insisted that the said newspaper had to prove the veracity of the documents before she makes any comments.

However, WFTV can confirm that intense political pressure is now on the President to quit.

The Parliament will debate a motion of no confidence against the President soon.
