Govt to decide on total lockdown tomorrow | Free Malaysia Today - Free Malaysia Today

A total lockdown will see most companies forced to close and only essential businesses operating.

PETALING JAYA: The government will deliberate on whether a stricter lockdown should be imposed under the current movement control order (MCO) at a National Security Council (MKN) meeting tomorrow.

According to Berita Harian, de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan said the meeting would be chaired by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

“It is one of the measures that the authorities especially MKN needs to consider, because it is the only other option available,” he told reporters after a meeting with the Kelantan MKN in Kota Bharu today.

Takiyuddin reassured that managing the pandemic remained the government’s top priority.

He also said Putrajaya was putting all its efforts into raising public awareness on the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

Yesterday, Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari was reported to have said that there would be discussions on enforcing a total lockdown under the MCO in the state within the week.

Amirudin had stressed that a total lockdown must be accompanied by a comprehensive plan to protect lives and livelihoods, while curbing the spread of the virus.

The whole country, except Sarawak, is currently under the MCO which is scheduled to end on June 7.

With the continued rise in the number of daily cases and deaths due to Covid-19, there have been calls for a return to the full lockdown that had been imposed on the country between March and May last year.
