How disastrous was David Moyes reign at Manchester United?
After the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes took over the club. Manchester United’s pre-season saw them suffer three defeats in seven games.
It was, for many, a “poor” and “miserable” performance and this characterised Moyes’ season with the club.
It was a season that resulted in Man Utd winning only one trophy, the 2013 FA Community Shield.
Under Moyes, United saw the end of a host of records. The loss to Manchester City was the worst defeat at the Etihad Stadium in nine years.
David Moyes left Old Trafford with plenty of negative moments to his name. They remain some of the lowest in the club’s history.
Below are some of the stand out statistics that show where it all went wrong for the former Manchester United boss:

- Everton wins at Old Trafford for the first time in 21 years by 1-0.
- Everton completed the double over United by winning at Goodison Park. It’s the first league double over United for Everton since 1970.
- Newcastle United had a wretched season, but they managed their first win at Old Trafford in 41 years by beating United 1-0.
- Swansea secured their first-ever win at Old Trafford by beating United in the FA Cup 3rd Round, sending them out at the first hurdle for only the second time in 30 years.
- Following the first leg defeat to Sunderland in the Capital One Cup semi-final, it became the first time that United had lost three matches in January for over 30 years.
- Stoke City beat United in a league match for the first time in 30 years.
- The first leg loss to Olympiacos in the Champions League was their first defeat ever to Greek opposition.
- After 34 matches, United had 57 points, 27 points fewer than this stage last season. They also suffered more defeats at home this season (with six defeats) than in the previous three seasons combined, where they only lost five.
This is not all, folks. There were the signings and the players and managers who left under Moyes.
The club did not recover from this folly. Is it the fault of Sir Alex or that of the owners?
I guess when you are leaving an organization; you have no say in the day-to-day running of things. But did Sir Alex have a say in who will be the next coach?
If he had a hand in it, then Moyes must be his worst signing at Manchester United.
