Malaysia welcomes Heyzer as UN special envoy to Myanmar

Malaysia today says it warmly welcomes the appointment of Dr Noeleen Heyzer as the new United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar.

Malaysia believes that Dr Heyzer, a former senior UN diplomat, would bring considerable expertise and impetus for constructive and meaningful engagement towards a peaceful resolution to the prevailing situation in Myanmar.

“As there had been insufficient progress with regard to the situation on the ground, Malaysia is deeply concerned over the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar and its impact on regional security.

“Malaysia calls on the international community to actively support efforts to immediately end the violence and to improve the situation on the ground towards sustainable peace for the people of Myanmar,” a Wisma Putra media release signed by Minister Saifuddin Abdullah says.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also says Malaysia stands ready to support and engage constructively with the UNSG’s Special Envoy on Myanmar and all relevant stakeholders in resuming the political process to advance a durable and dignified resolution to the situation in the country, including hosting the Special Envoy in Malaysia in the near future.

Malaysia also wishes to express its gratitude to Christine Schraner Burgener for her dedicated service in support of the people of Myanmar during her tenure as the UN Secretary General’s (UNSG) Special Envoy in Myanmar from April 2018 to October 2021.
