Mauritius caretaker government mulls emergency declaration as opposition gains ground - sources
Pravind Jugnauth, caretaker Prime Minister, is said to be in trouble in his constituency where he might face defeat against the opposition alliance
PORT LOUIS, Oct 31 - Mauritius may soon declare a state of emergency, sources close to the caretaker government led by Pravind Jugnauth said on Tuesday, as his party, the Mouvement Socialiste Militant (MSM), faces dwindling support in the lead-up to national polls.
The government announced a blockade on social media platforms, including YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook, sparking widespread criticism among citizens relying on these channels for political updates. The ban has fueled tension, particularly around The Sun Trust building, the MSM headquarters.
Opposition coalition Alliance du Changement is reportedly leading in the polls, projected to win 55 of the 60 parliamentary seats, with some forecasts showing Jugnauth himself facing a potential defeat in his constituency. The opposition, buoyed by its surge in popularity, has called for a mass rally this weekend to mobilize supporters. However, opposition sources say they are concerned that an emergency declaration could force them to postpone the event.
In response to the social media blackout, the Alliance du Changement has announced alternative voter outreach initiatives, details of which are expected to be shared soon.
