Merdeka video: MAH SING honours Malaysians reinventing way of living

Kuala Lumpur, 2020 – In line with its tagline, ‘Reinvent Spaces. Enhance Life,’ Mah Sing Group Berhad (Mah Sing) has rolled-out a four-part Merdeka video series, honouring Malaysians reinventing their way of living, following the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to the unprecedented Movement Control Order (MCO) and the current Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO).

Mah Sing’s Founder and Group Managing Director, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Leong Hoy Kum said, “The pandemic has affected all of us and Mah Sing is no different. We also had to change and reinvent the way we do business. We draw strength from our resilient Malaysians, especially those who have had to diversify their income source to make ends meet. As we look around today, we can see that the Rakyat is striving forward and is trying their best to survive during these challenging times, which gives us hope to continue to reinventing and growing.”

“In conjunction with our 63rd Merdeka, Mah Sing is honouring the men and women affected by the pandemic in these four-part video series named The Fighting Spirit – ‘Spirit of Reinvention,’ which highlights the period of reinvention and determination.

“The video series showcases everyday Malaysians overcoming the hardships of life with hard work, dedication, and most importantly, facing adversity with courage.

“So far, we have released the first three parts of the series and the fourth and final installation is scheduled to go live on 28 August 2020.

Fighting Fit

In times of adversity, it is always important for us to always drive forward and reinvent our living. Let us all rise above the challenge together as a nation.

This is a story about Chin Jie Xun, 33, who is now working at the Selayang Wet Market (Pasar Borong Selayang. Formerly a Gym Instructor, Chin Jie Xun lost his job due to the MCO.

“I see it as an opportunity to earn money while keeping myself fit with the hard physical labour. Although I doubt I will be able to return to my previous profession for the time being, I will never succumb to the hardship of my life. Just keep carrying on and never give up in your life,” Chin Jie Xun said.

Going the Extra Mile

As the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely disrupted our lives, it is now time for us to start reinventing our lives together as a nation.

Shortly after graduation, Azlan Abu Bakar, 30 ventured into the working field as a factory engineer before the company he worked for was affected by the pandemic, which led to his retrenchment.

“It is not easy when you take up a job that is totally different from your previous industry. But you know it is the only way for me to make a living at this point in time. Now, I enjoy delivering food to people. Seeing them happily receiving the food that I’ve delivered made me realised that my job is worthwhile. Maybe I will stop being a rider once I get back to the engineering line.  But for the time being, my fighting spirit to earn a living will continue to drive me forward,” Azlan Abu Bakar, explained.

Pushing the Boundaries

We are together with the Rakyat in these unprecedented times and their fighting spirit inspires us to carry on reinventing the way we do business.

At 55 years old, Shanti Ganesan, who was previously a senior manager in a travelling company now works as a grocery worker at a hypermarket after the company closed down permanently due to the pandemic.

“Due to the pandemic, the tourism industry was badly affected. The company, after operating for more than ten years, was closed down permanently. After spending almost my entire career in the tourism industry, I have to work as a grocery worker, in order to feed my family, my daughter, and granddaughter. I am grateful I can still get a job amid the current economic situation,” she elaborated.
