Pahang Forestry Dept: Lorry spotted with timber on East Coast Expressway had permit - The Star Online

KUANTAN: The lorry spotted carrying huge pieces of timber on the East Coast Expressway has a permit to do so, says the Pahang Forestry Department

It said it stopped and inspected the lorry at the westbound Gombak rest stop after a complaint was aired by environmentalist Khaidir Ahmad on Facebook.

“The inspection also found that the information of the lorry and timber are the same as stated in the transfer pass issued by the Terengganu Forestry Department. It is understood that this cargo will be sent to a factory in Selangor,” said the department in a statement on Monday (May 24)

Khaidir had posted pictures of the lorry, which he stated were taken at 5.50pm on Sunday (May 23) at the westbound Temerloh rest stop and questioned how the timber managed to pass inspection or tax payments when the forestry inspection station was closed on Sunday.

“It is impossible that the authorities including the Road Transport Department and the highway police patrol did not see this lorry carrying timber of that size,” he said, further alleging that the lorry left the rest stop upon realising that it was being photographed.

Khaidir’s post was subsequently reposted by Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia on Facebook.

The state Forestry Department said it appreciated the complaint but hoped it could be channelled directly to the appropriate government departments or agencies – including the Department – so quick action could be taken.

“This department is always sensitive and responsible towards all complaints reported to ensure that firm and immediate action is taken in order to preserve the state’s forestry treasures,” it said.
