PM: Enforcement authorities must work together to tackle indiscriminate price hikes - The Star Online

PUTRAJAYA: Enforcement authorities should combine efforts and work together to tackle indiscriminate price hikes, particularly during the festive seasons, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Prime Minister said this is to ensure continuous monitoring and effective enforcement against unscrupulous businesses.

“We have been hearing people’s grouses over increases in the prices of essential goods during Ramadan and this will certainly burden consumers.

“That is why the government, through the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry has implemented the maximum price scheme to help consumers, particularly those of low income, traders and petty traders,” he said during a visit to the ministry on Friday (April 23).

Muhyiddin said the government needed to ensure action was taken against unethical activities so it could be stopped effectively.

The Prime Minister, who visited the ministry’s enforcement command centre, said the visit enabled him to look at the on-ground situation for enforcement activities, especially the challenges officers faced when the prices of essential goods went up.

He said that 2021 promises a better future for Malaysians with the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme in place, which is key to fighting the virus.

“We will also continue with economic recovery efforts. The government has identified 10 important points that will determine the way forward for the country including health sector reforms, education, food security and digitalisation,” he said.

Muhyiddin said that for this purpose, the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 will be the central policy to ensure Malaysians attain a decent living standard by 2030.

“The launching of the 12th Malaysia Plan expected in the middle of the year will support the aspirations of the Shared Prosperity Vision which among others will focus on initiatives that will benefit the business community,” said Muhyiddin.

Also present were Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi and deputy minister Datuk Rosol Wahid.
