Press freedom and the fight for accountability: Defending the media
The media needs to be transparent, open and embrace collaboration to rebuild trust with audiences.
It has to defend itself against threats to press freedom, said a panel of reporters speaking at the Safeguarding The Truth event.
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists joined the Committee to Protect Journalists and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at USC Annenberg in Los Angeles for an in-depth conversation about press freedom and the fight for accountability.
ICIJ’s deputy director Marina Walker, ICIJ member and Süddeutsche Zeitung reporter Bastian Obermayer, were joined on a panel by CPJ’s executive director Joel Simon, HFPA’s Ramzy Malouki and Columbia Journalism School’s Sheila Coronel, who is also on the boards of both ICIJ and CPJ. Gordon Stables, from USC Annenberg’s school of journalism, moderated the discussion.
The event was sponsored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which earlier this year donated $1 million to ICIJ and CPJ.
