Random police checks on foreigners not allowed without just cause, says IGP - The Star Online

KUALA LUMPUR: Police personnel and officers are barred from conducting random checks on foreigners without probable cause, says Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani (pic).
The new Inspector-General of Police said this instruction is to prevent abuse of power by anyone on the police force.
“I will issue the directive that the act of checking foreigners randomly without probable cause is to be stopped immediately.
“Remanding a foreigner for two weeks just to check the validity of their passport or travel documents will also not be allowed.
“If a foreigner (is not a crime suspect), there is no need to detain him for two weeks just to check the validity of his documents.
”Overseas, you hardly hear of such occurrences,” he told a special press conference in Bukit Aman on Thursday (May 6).
He added that the enforcement mentality should advance to meet the demands of progress.
“We want to serve the public, not burden it,” Acryl Sani said.
