Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, has emphasized the importance of ASEAN remaining independent and neutral amidst the ongoing rivalry between the US and China.

During an interview with China's national broadcaster CCTV, which was recorded during his recent visit to Beijing and aired on Friday, Anwar underscored the significance of maintaining peace and stability in the region.

As one of the five founding members of ASEAN, Malaysia is committed to ensuring the organization's original objectives are upheld.

ASEAN Neutrality and AUKUS

Anwar stated that the region should not be used as a base for military competition, nor should it be embroiled in unnecessary provocation as a result of the rivalry.

He cited concerns that the AUKUS trilateral security pact involving Australia, the UK, and the US in the Indo Pacific could exacerbate tensions in the region.

He urged China and the US to work towards finding an amicable solution to ease tensions. On the domestic front, Anwar highlighted Malaysia's focus on promoting good governance to drive further growth and development for the country while stamping out corruption.
