Large Muslim crowd forces Lgbt group to cancel Port Louis march

A march organised by the Collectif Arc-en-Ciel – a Lgbt group – was cancelled after it was allowed to go on today.

The rally was cancelled by the police citing potential disruption of peace.

A large crowd of Muslims had assembled near the Caudan area, where the Lgbt group wanted to start their march in Port Louis city.

Seeing the anti-Lgbt crowd at the Places D’Armes, the police decided to prevent the Lgbt march.

The march called the Marche des Fiertés was to showcase the right of the Lgbt community to be seen openly in Mauritius.

But a Muslim organisation rallied the Muslim religious leaders to intervene through the Prime Minister office in Port Louis to have the march cancelled.

The Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth first agreed to get the march cancelled but peer pressure from two Embassies in Port Louis, the U.S. and French Embassies, brought the PM to his knees, WFTV was told.

The back peddling of the pro-Lgbt group – headed by Westerners and backed by foreign agencies – is a success for the Muslim group.

A local newspaper called the Muslim group ‘a tiny unit’ of Homophobes.

But the demonstration of force by the young and elderly Muslims today is a slap to the deniers.

Despite reinforced security with the use of numerous policemen on the streets at Places D’armes, the Lgbt movement failed to carry out its demo.

Some in the crowd of protesters said they never saw that large number of policemen in support of a little-known group in the country.

On top of that, the group is a foreign one headed by Westerners and they managed to get full support from the local police force.

Meanwhile, the police would have surely not hesitated to use force had the anti-Lgbt group were to come closer to Caudan.

The regular police force was there as well as elements of the Special Supporting Unit.

Were they really there to prevent any disruptions or to protect the Lgbt, that is what many are asking!
