Liew Chin Tong Warns Umno-BN Pre‑2018 Dominance Era Is Over

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8— Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong has cautioned Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) against contesting Johor’s state election alone, warning the party risks a painful repeat of its national election setbacks. His remarks follow BN’s insistence on fielding candidates in all 56 seats, despite Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s call to avoid clashes with Pakatan Harapan (PH). BN chief Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed he is finalising the candidate list, signalling no Madani deal in Johor.

Liew argued Umno’s solo move reflects its ambition to restore dominance reminiscent of its pre‑2018 one‑party rule.

Umno-BN

“Umno wants to turn back the clock to before 2018,” he said, noting BN’s collapse in GE15 when it secured only 23 parliamentary seats compared to PH’s 82 and PN’s 74. He warned that while BN may perform strongly in Johor, its national prospects remain weak.

He also blamed MCA for pushing Umno to go solo, claiming the party seeks more seats without PH’s presence. Liew concluded: “No Malaysians in their right mind want to return to pre‑2018 UMNO’s dominance. The era has changed.”
