At last, Thailand to prosecute security personnel in the Tak Bai killing

Thailand will prosecute eight former security personnel for their roles in a 2004 crackdown in which 78 protesters suffocated or were crushed to death in army trucks in Tak Bai, Narathiwat province.

This comes just weeks before the statute of limitations expires on October 25 and follows a related complaint accepted by the court last month.

The 2004 incident, which took place under then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was one of the deadliest during the ongoing separatist insurgency in Thailand’s predominantly Muslim southern provinces.

Arrest warrants for six retired security personnel were also recently issued for failing to appear in court.
