Anwar Urges Unity Amid Johor Election Tensions

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim underscored his commitment to coalition unity, stressing that clashes among partners in Johor’s state elections would be meaningless. He advised Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters to avoid spats with Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN), noting that despite contesting against each other, leaders must still cooperate in Cabinet meetings.

Anwar admitted that BN and PH’s decision to contest all seats in Johor created a “headache,” but insisted his preference was to work alongside unity government partners. He blamed BN for triggering instability, saying, “It was their choice to call for an election. It was their choice to create political instability.” He added, “If they want a fight, then we will fight.”

Social media reactions were divided. Some users criticized Anwar’s call for restraint, accusing him of inconsistency, while others questioned PH’s strategy to contest all seats. Yet, voices like Felicia Elly Chen urged pragmatism, emphasizing stability and strong leadership amid global uncertainty.

Anwar reiterated that his focus remains on economic priorities, not elections. Johor’s assembly was dissolved on June 1, requiring polls within 60 days. In March 2022, BN won 40 seats, PH 12, Perikatan Nasional three, and Muda one.
