A businessman, Leong Chan, has addressed the backlash following a viral video showing a cat tied to the rear of a moving pickup truck. Leong explained that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding and was misinterpreted as animal cruelty.

Leong, who manages homes in Ipoh and Simpang Ampat, Juru, was trying to spay (sterilise) a stray cat after discovering dead kittens in his home.

“I caught the cat this week to have it spayed after it had given birth to several kittens, some of which were found dead,” he said.

Leong placed the cat in a basket inside his friend’s pickup truck for a trip to a veterinary clinic about 1.5 kilometers away.

However, the cat escaped the basket and was briefly seen dragging behind the vehicle. A passer-by photographed the scene, and the image quickly went viral, sparking outrage online.

Leong clarified, “The leash was not tight; it was only to prevent the cat from running off.” He only realized the cat had escaped when he arrived at the clinic and immediately sought treatment for the animal. The cat is now recovering, and Leong has reported the incident to clear the air.

Nibong Tebal police chief Chong Boo Khim confirmed, “Leong was on his way to an animal clinic after finding the stray near his housing estate. Investigations revealed that the cat was left hanging by the leash only because it had managed to escape from the basket.”

Leong has since cooperated with authorities and placed the cat under the care of the state veterinary services department in Seberang Jaya.
