Protests were probably in defiance of lockdown while people are struggling to make ends meet, sources say.

Protesters called on prime minister Minister Manasseh Sogavare to resign as riots took place for a second day. Australia said it would send a peacekeeping force to the Pacific nation seized by inter-island tension.

Manasseh Sogavare blamed anti-government protests, arson, and looting in the capital Honiara on Friday on foreign interference in his government’s decision to switch alliances from Taiwan to Beijing.

However, critics blamed the unrest on complaints about a lack of government services and accountability, corruption, and Chinese businesses hiring foreigners rather than locals.
