Rafizi Claims Umno Using Negeri Sembilan Crisis to Push Snap Polls
Although Bloomberg reported Anwar is considering polls later this year, the Prime Minister has denied plans for snap elections.
A political storm in Negeri Sembilan has been described by former economy minister Rafizi Ramli as part of Umno’s strategy to push for early general elections. Speaking on his podcast “Yang Berhenti Menteri,” Rafizi claimed the crisis mirrors tactics used in the Malacca and Johor polls, designed to pressure Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim into dissolving Parliament.
Rafizi, who resigned last year, made the remarks before appearing at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya over investigations linked to Arm Holdings. He alleged Umno aims for elections in October alongside state polls in Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, and Johor.
Although Bloomberg reported Anwar is considering polls later this year, the Prime Minister has denied plans for snap elections. The crisis escalated when 14 Umno assemblypersons briefly withdrew support for Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun, but intervention from Anwar and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi prevented a collapse of the Unity Government.
