Anwar Rejects Rumours of Bersatu Joining Pakatan Harapan
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim dismissed speculation that Bersatu would join Pakatan Harapan, reaffirming his current coalition's stability despite state-level frictions.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has firmly dismissed speculation that Bersatu might join his ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. Speaking in Japan, Anwar stated that no negotiations are underway, describing political relationships as collaborative rather than volatile marriages and divorces.
The rumours surfaced after PAS severed its alliance with Bersatu, an opposition partnership that secured 76 seats in the 2022 general elections. PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari called the split a "bitter pill" necessary for long-term Muslim unity and national stability.
Bersatu, led by former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, previously triggered the 2020 "Sheraton Move" collapse of the PH government. Anwar emphasized that he will not engage in political manoeuvres that betray his current partners.
RUMOURS
The political shift arrives amid internal friction within the federal Unity Government. Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno recently announced plans to contest all seats in the upcoming Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, creating tension with PH at the state level.
However, Anwar brushed aside calls for early general elections, maintaining that the federal government remains robust. "The Cabinet leadership is consistent in stating that the Unity Government at the national level must remain strong," he concluded.
