Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says his country does not agree with Western pressure to condemn Palestinian militant group Hamas.
The Prime Minister said on Monday Western and European countries have repeatedly asked Malaysia to condemn Hamas in meetings.
“I said that we, as a policy, have a relationship with Hamas from before and this will continue,” Mr Anwar told the Malaysian Parliament.
Rejecting Western Call
“As such, we don’t agree with their pressuring attitude, as Hamas won in Gaza freely through elections and Gazans chose them to lead,” he reminded the Western nations.
The West has given complete backing to Israel in Hamas' attack on Israeli soil. However, the Western world has never condemned Israel for its state terrorism and for attacking innocent Palestinian citizens inside Israel.
Muslim-majority Malaysia has long been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, and has advocated a two-state solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. It does not have diplomatic relations with Israel and top Hamas leaders in the past have often visited Malaysia and met its premiers.
