The shock of the Monaco Targeted Bombing
A rare parcel bomb in peaceful Monaco targeted sanctioned Ukrainian oligarch Vadym Yermolaiev, leaving a woman with life-altering injuries
Monaco, famous for its near-zero crime rate, has been rocked by a historic targeted bombing. A backpack packed with nuts and bolts exploded in the foyer of the Sun Palace flats on Rue Révérend Père Louis Frolla, targeting 58-year-old Ukrainian construction tycoon Vadym Yermolaiev.
The blast wounded three people. A 13-year-old boy was thrown nearly 50 feet by the force of the explosion, while his mother—initially misidentified as Yermolaiev’s wife, Anna—sustained catastrophic, life-threatening injuries while trying to shield her son. She remains in a Nice hospital following the amputation of her limbs. Yermolaiev's actual wife, Anna, confirmed she was elsewhere and is cooperating with law enforcement.
Monaco Shocked
Christophe Mirmand, Monaco's Minister of State, confirmed this is the first attack of its kind in the principality's history. He revealed that CCTV footage shows a suspect circling the neighborhood to conduct surveillance before leaving the device. The suspect remains at large, considered armed and dangerous.
Authorities have ruled out terrorism, focusing instead on a personal vendetta. Yermolaiev, who fled Ukraine a decade ago, was sanctioned by President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2023 for continuing to conduct business with Russia in occupied Crimea.
